I’ve been working on a series of images that I call “Imagine” for the last 8 or so years now.. the images start with me coming up with an idea, usually that idea is formed from asking myself “I wonder…” or “what if..”. Then the research starts to find a suitable location, the right conditions (weather, time of day, time of month for the moon or sun position and time of year for seasonal changes and position of the stars) and trying to then capture the image in my head.
This shot was something that I’d imagined and was wondering if there was a way to get the shot, so about a decade ago I travelled to Karijini National Park (19 hours drive from my house) to see if I could get the shot I had in my head, as it seemed like the ideal location.
The resulting photo went viral right across social media, has been published in numerous magazines, won competitions and appeared on the cover of books… it has also been endlessly copied by other photographers since, which I see as a challenge to then go and do something even more original
