Perth Lightning Storm 20th January

Last night we had one of the most active lightning storms I’ve ever seen in my life. Lightning was going off every half second at the most. I followed the storm from south of Perth out to the ocean and got some of the best photos I’ve ever taken of lightning. I also remembered to do some video.. I’ll have that up shortly.

Here are the photos:

All images are copyright Paul Pichugin, not to be used for commercial use with out my permission. Sorry I have to include that but a TV station has used my images with out credit / payment or permission previously.

I’ll have the video online shortly I hope!

Such clarity. The power of the shots matches the power of the lightning. A joy to look at!

Paul, we live in Port Kennedy and witnessed the biggest /baddest Thunder storms of our lives. It was mesmerising, and as you said, the strikes were no more than half a second apart! Full respect to you for venturing out in that to get these amazing pics!! Keep up the great work.

I live in the UK and received a message from my daughter, who lives in Mandurah, saying that she had not been able to sleep all night and that if I clicked on the link, I’d find out why! Your photographs are fantastic! I’ve been to Perth many times but not managed to see anything like this…looking forward to the video….. hope you receive the financial rewards your work deserves.

Totally awesome shots! I was right underneath all that in Rockingham – was pretty horrific – 2 strikes within metres of the house – one in the road right in front of where I was standing and one in the back garden – nothing hit the roof amazingly but the stench of ozone was overpowering and the noise was deafening – very scary. I did pick up the camera but decided that it given it was all coming down around me that it probably wasn’t a good idea!!

It got a little too close for comfort at one stage.. and it’s terrible that a few people were actually hit by lightning as well. I’m glad I headed out though :)

I’ve found these via a friend on Facebook and they are stunning photos, Paul. You rarely see pictures that really illustrate the power of storms and these capture it brilliantly. I live in the UK and visited Perth a few years ago, in October. I’m an amateur photographer and I’d dream of getting shots like this! I’ll look forward to the video.

Paul, absolutely stunning shots. I watched from the safety of my bedroom window. You said that youve not captured lightening shots like this before. Have you considered going up to the Northern Territory in their wet season?? The storms up there are ten times better than the one we had here in Perth last night. The thunder alone is a real treat. Like giants playing bowling on wooden floors :)
